Damwerkplaats

#50. Henk van der Heijden (14 november 2016)
"Ik heb een probleem met een probleem. Het is helaas b.o. en ik kom er niet uit om het goed te krijgen. Mogelijk kan iemand er iets mee. Bedoelde oplossing (solution meant):

1. 47-41 36x47  2. 20-15 47x33  3. 27x38 16x18  4. 23x03 14x34  5. 03x05 33x47  6. 43-38 47x20  7. 15x24 11x22  8. 24-20 25x14  9. 05x44...

#50. November 14, 2016
Henk van der Heijden has a problem with the problem on the left.

It has a side solution ("b.o."), given below the solution meant, that he couldn't repair so far.

May-be somebody else can do something with or about it.
#49. Tom Kieboom (10 november 2016)
#49. November 10, 2016
Tom Kieboom
did not really succeed to make a bigger problem on one of the same shot combination of the three 5x5 postions shown on the left.

White wins sharp through, respectively:

L:   18-13, 13x4, 4x2
M: 18-12, 12x1, 1x3
R:   19-13, 13x2, 2x4

May-be, somebody else has the inspiration to make something acceptable upon this?
#48. Herman Spanjer (4 oktober 2016)

#48. October 4, 2016
Herman Spanjer
sent the failure on the left diagram to Henk van der Heijden.

But If black plays 44-49 or 13-19 instead of 13-18 at the end, white looses!

May-be, some repair is possible.

If so, please send it to the webmaster!
#47.

#47. August 26, 2016
Leen de Rooij presents a problem with many positive elements: choice of shots, taking the most, Coup Turc and Coup de la Trappe, ending in a pure opposition. Ideal, but white has two pieces less than black.

Are you able to convert this problem, maintaining most of the abovementioned elements, into a more well-balanced initial position?

Please send suggestions per e-mail to Leen!

[If black jumps 37x46 in the first move, white follows with 48-42 and 36-31, and furtheron as in the main variant]
[If black jumps 37x48 in the second move, white can win more easily]
#46.

#46. May 31, 2016
Leen de Rooij presents this time no motif but a stroke combination that has to be improved.

A beautiful system whereby the kings and piece 41 are moved very nicely to their right positions.

Unfortunately, the problem contains a side solution by
47-41 (36x47) 27-22 (47x33) 50-44 (33x50) 22x4 (50x11) 4x45+.
In addition, it is a pitty that white has one piece less.

Who is able to make a better arrangement? Please send suggestions per e-mail to Leen!

Tom Kieboom sent Leen the right diagram, unfortunately again containg the side solution 12-8.

#45. May 24, 2016
Leen de Rooij asks for help to improve his two imperfect creations shown on the left.

Please, send any help by e-mail to him.

#44. April 18 - May 2 - May 14, 2016. Leen de Rooij
sent this motif, MM code 0111 --(14) = 25(46) black to move, with the challenge to make a beautiful arrangement of it:
'I myself did not succeed to do this'.
The first time this motif was published was in 1951 by Jan Scheijen.
The second time, Evgraf Zubov made a beautiful composition of the motif in De Problemist of 2005.
So, there is still ample room for challinging composing: please send an e-mail to Leen de Rooij!

Evgraf Zubov                Jan Scheijen, arr. Tjipke Smedinga     Virmantas Masiulis

Leen de Rooij did receive seven arrangements, read his reaction!

The left diagram shows the promised composition of Evraf Zubov.

The right diagram shows the arrangement made by Tjipke Smedinga on an earlier side-solution-containing problem of Jan Scheijen.

A very beautiful achievement to convert this motif into a good initial position!

Virmantas Masiulis couldn't stop and sent another two ones. Read Leen's reaction.

His best composition is shown in the right diagram.

#43. March 24, 2016
Joost De Heer [L+M] and Henk van der Heijden [R]
Inspired by #42, showed last week on facebook these three compositions, in 'declining' motif code 2001 > 1001 > 0001.

The first one [L] ends with one white king against two black men, i.e. the motif given under #42.

The second one [M] with only one black man.

The third one [R] without a black man as king naturel.

So, Leen de Rooij has thrown a heavy stone into the quiet draughts water.
#42.

#42. March 15-22, 2016
Leen de Rooij questions if the motif of the 1st row L can be arranged into a composition, preferably without a king in the initial position.
Who tries to do this will experience the difficulties: the counterstroke is quite difficult to realise. Before you know, there are dual solutions inwhich white can shot over piece 30.

Leen himself has arranged the motif, with MM code 10.30 (--) = -- (23), into a composition with a black king in the initial position. This will be shown here after a while, in order to give everyone the opportunity to come up with eventual better arrangements!
Compositions can be sent by e-mail or put on facebook.

Fast response, on March 16, by both Krijn Hemminga (1st row M) on facebook and Tom Kieboom (1st row R) by e-mail: two compositions based on almost the same round stroke 2x23 by the white king!

In addition, Henk van der Heijden placed that same day a compostion on facebook, of which, unfortunately, the initial position cannot be explained (2nd row L).

Further, Virmantas Masiulis sent on March 18  three compositions, and another one on March 22, all also based on the 2x23 round stroke of the white king. These four are shown by the diagrams 2nd row M+R and 3rd row L+M.

Finally, you'll find the promised composition of Leen de Rooij
(3rd row R).

E-mail response of Leen de Rooij: 'The motif is a bit less difficult as I thought.'

By far, the best composition is diagram
2nd row M of Virmantas Masiulis: beautiful initial position and strokes.

The most peculiar one is diagram
3rd row R
of Leen de Rooij: a Mondriaan-like initial position, in black-and-white admittedly, with a 1x3x3x3x3x3x3x3x5-stroke after white's first move 22-28.
#41. Tom Kieboom (12 maart 2016)

#41. March 12, 2016
Tom Kieboom put on February 25 the sharp ending of the left diagram on facebook (a really fast working place!) with the question 'Is it possible to arrange this towards an acceptable composition?' The position is easily created after 30-24 (19x30) or 24-19 (13x30). Up to now, the answer of the facebookers is negative, unfortunately. Therefore, here again the request  in this working place for the 'websiters'.
Who knows?

He himself made the arrangement of the center diagram, with an uneconomical 3-stroke and an unequal number of pieces as, unwanted, compromise.

After a nice pass by Krijn Hemminga on facebook (March 8 2016): "Possibly something for further inspiration?", Tom Kieboom succeeded, with the 25th attempt on March 27, 2016, to get an acceptable arrangement with an equal number of pieces without the ugly uneconomical stroke.
See the right diagram. A game-like initial position is apparently too much to be asked for.

#40. February 11, 2016
Leen de Rooij
made a goal on his own assist of the motif under #39. Without a king in the initial position, although the arrangement is far from ideal, as he says.
The program Kingsrow is so childish to mention that, probably, white may also win by 17-11 (26x6, the best) 9-3, 3x45 etc. However, black can break through for king by two men and white's eventual gain is a quite long way to go. So, we may not really speak about a distinct positional side solution.

Then, Henk van der Heijden came with a reaction:  "Is 1.9-4 34x25 2.14-10 25x12 3.10-5 8x30 4.17x8 5.5x45 2x13 6.4x35 15-20 7.35-24 20x29 8.45x23 ... a side solutions?". whereon Leen de Rooij answered: "That's right, Henk. is there no way to get it right?"
Then, as a Jack in the box, Virmantas Masiulis, again!, came with a tremendous platitude: "Just put the black man 40 on square 44 and there is no side solution anymore". (Right diagram). Response of Leen: "That's the 1+1=2, we didn't see it. Finally! Thanks to the wizard."
Who is able to make a better goal?
The webmaster is in doubt!

This is a perfect example of "How a draughts problem is arising", webmaster's column in De Problemist: Rob Spijkers, as goal keeper, did a goal-kick with that exeptional motif  (see #39), Leen de Rooij did an extra-ordinary job by making a 'king-free' composition upon it, Henk van der Heijden saw, unfortunately, a side solution of Leen's composition, and, finally, Virmantas Masiulis came in as rescue ranger to complete all those former effort in a really sharp composition. Who is (are) the author(s), is now the question!
The recent publication of the experimental prove of Einstein's gravity waves, predicted one century ago, counts a thousand of authors! Therefore, the above draughts composition must count four authors for their respective contributions, i.e. Leen de Rooij*, Rob Spijkers, Henk van der Heijden, and Virmantas Masiulis, as is accepted in the scientific literature, wherein the main author, in this case Leen, is foreseen with an asterix!
Simply, you non-Dutch readers,
see the text on the left!
#39. Rob Spijkers (5 februari 2016)

#39. February 5, 2016
Rob Spijkers
received from Eddie van de Acker, the unsurpassed controller of the 7x7 AG collection, the motif with the position, in MM code
2002: 15.39 (--) = -- (24)(29),
found on the site
minietiud.forum2x2.ru.

It is unknown in both Turbo Dambase and Motif Mine. The motif has two really sharp solutions, shown by the two diagrams.

Rob didn't succeed to make an acceptable arrangement, however.

"Who will and can?", is Rob's question!

Leen de Rooij (February 7) gave a nice assist with the desired solution of the right diagram. However, if black strokes differently after white's first move, it is a draw. In addition, if white plays 9-3 as first move, white wins by
18-12, 12-07, 17x6, 3x35 and 6-1 (remark by Henk van der Heijden). Who makes the goal?

#38. February 3, 2016
Leen de Rooij sent an improvement of the three motifs of #37, shown by the three diagrams.
(N.B. More positions for the catch position 'white king plus man' are possible)

It proves quite difficult to compose an arrangement on these, however.

Is it a mission impossible?

Leen de Rooij has created the composition on the left, based on the first motif, with the motto "Eventually, everything can be arranged".
Problem is the silent black king on 45, just waiting till he is captured by white.

Shortly after, Leen de Rooij composed the problem of the right diagram, based on a variant of the third motif (with WK 15->5 and WP 24->19). Acceptable, but the black king is not placed on position, although it has a supporting function

May-be, someone is able to make a better arrangement.

P.S. Leen de Rooij: "There is something curious with the motif. Normally, a king is stronger than a man, but here the possession of a king is black's defeat. If 45 were a man, black achieves a draw by
(40-44) 49x40 (45x34) and the humble white man prohibits his king to prevent black from getting a king!"

"It is a nice composition, almost magic! Now I am looking for a composition (without kings) based on the third motif under #38. Is it possible? May-be you, as great magician, will be successful."
Zie het rechter diagram. Standverklaring: 15-10 (14-19) 48-42 (10-14).

#37. February 1, 2016
Leen de Rooij asks for help to arrange these three motifs (with black to move).
Preferably without any king in the initial position.

(N.B. More positions for the catch position 'white king plus man' are possible)

(See the three diagrams on the left)

Leen himself didn't really succeed with the arrangement of the moving diagram on the left, based on the third motif.
It would have been acceptable if there was no side solution present.
After the stroke (48x45) of the black king, however, white can also win by superior numbers with the shot 49x40, followed by 1-12 and the stroke 12x2.

By quick response, Virmantas Masiulis came with the composition of the right diagram. Legality: 15-10 (14-19) 48-42 (10-14).

Reaction of Leen de Rooij:
"It is a nice composition, almost magic! Now I am looking for a composition (without kings) based on the third motif under #38. Is it possible? May-be you, as great magician, will be successful."

#36.
Tom Kieboom  (28 januari 2016)

#36. January 28, 2016
Tom Kieboom  was searching for a composition that ends in a king shot 7x5, as symbol of the KvD 75-years jubilee. However, none was found.

Is it yet too difficult?

As inspiration, or inspiration, he himself made a quite false composition, starting with an uneconomical six-stroke, and ending with a black-out of black!

May-be, somebody can make something really beautiful?

By quick return, Leen de Rooij composed the position of the right diagram, with the remark: "7x5 is possible, although this composition is not that great."

Quite fast and beautiful, isn't it?
#35. Tom Kieboom (8 januari 2016)

P.S.: > 8000 Timoneda versus ca. 40 "Nameless" in Turbo Dambase!)

#35. January 8, 2016
Tom Kieboom  admits that the
"Nameless" motif with 3 black men
on 24, 30, and 35 and a white king
on 1, 7, 12, 18 or 23, with black to
move, is a rather poor extract from
the famous Timoneda motif.
The alternative "Nameless" motif,
however, with white to move is only
a couple of times arranged into a
composition: 1x with WK3, 2x with
WK4, and 1x with WP7.
So, may-be, there is still some more
music in these small variations of
the "Nameless" motif.
My first trial is shown by diagram L
on the left: a 7x7 miniature without
any motif men on the squares of the
initial position, ending with WP6 and
white to move.
To me, the first move 43-39 leads to
a deceptive gain. Unfortunately, black
last move 10-15 was quite stupid.
"Who is willing to improve my first trial?",
was also put by me on our facebook,
with a surprisingly fast result: Leen de
Rooij made within a couple of hours,
two beautiful compositions (see the
M and R diagrams)!!!
