Johan Bastiaannet besteedde in De Problemist van april 2016 ruime aandacht aan deze beroemde componist uit de Oekraïne. Hij werd de eerste wereldkampioen damcomposities in 2003. Drie van de in het artikel acht aangehaalde problemen zijn hieronder weergegeven.
Johan Bastiaannet gave ample attention to this famous problemist from Ukraine. He became the first world champion draughts compositions in 2003. Three of the eight problems cited are given below.

1: Mooie opbouw naar de verrasende slagcombinatie (48x13) 15x24 (45x23) 35-30! (25x34) 44-40! Zonder dam te halen rolt de witte genadeklap 49x7 er verrassend uit.\

3: Tweede prijs KvD Jubileumwedstrijd 1991/1992. Hoogtepunt is de witte dam, die tussenloopt met 4-27 en vervolgens plakt met de teruggang 27-18!

1: Alles draait hier om de subtiele witte opmars 50-44-39: merkwaardig hoe de zwarte schijf op 45 eerst wordt verjaagd naar 43, achtervolgd door de witte schijf op 50 en tenslotte door de witte dam wordt geslagen. De Problemist juni 1984.

1: "De Scrum genoemd, vanwege de wederzijdse 'omhelzing' van zwarte en witte schijven, zoals in een rugbywedstrijd, is mijn fraaiste compositie." Terwijl de standen van deze componist én partijspeler altijd op partijstanden doen lijken weet hij hiermee toch prachtige combinaties voor elkaar te krijgen, zoals deze! De Problemist oktober 2012.
Named "The Scrum", as the position reflects to a certain way the restarting position of a rugby (football) game. This composer prefers game-like positions and is able to create beautiful forcings and combinations from that. De Problemist October 2012.

2: Mooie partijstelling waarin de witte schijf op veld 34 kans ziet om als een duveltje uit een doosje de gehele zwarte legermacht uit te schakelen! De Problemist 2012. Vergelijk deze 9x9 met die van Tom Kieboom, waarbij de witte schijf 23 ook zoiets flikt!

3: Alweer een mooie partij-achtige stelling. Ondanks dat wit een schijf achter staat weet wit op het nippertje, zoals dat "hoort" in damproblemen, te winnen via een fraaie 2x3x4-weggever! Deze website, dekvd.net, 11 december 2014.

Een maand voor overlijden verscheen zijn bijdrage 'Hoe ontstaat een damprobleem' in De Problemist april 2016.

1: Deze compositie eindigt met een waanzinnig damoffer van wit via een meerslag 48x33. Dat er in 1985 nog zo'n klassieker te maken bleek te zijn op het overbekende patroon (47x49x20) van de zwarte dam! De Problemist oktober 1985 en december 2015, blz. 213, diagram 2079.

1: Ongelofelijk zo lang de zwarte schijf tijdens de ontleding op veld 43 blijft hangen, terwijl intussen de ultieme buitelaar wordt opgevoerd! Damwereld 11 januari 1939.

Slechts drie zetten diepe slagcombinatie, die zich niet makkelijk laat raden. Fraaie meerslag van zwart na wits zet 27-22, gevolgd door een geniale slag 22x24 van wit. Le Soir 1946.
Only three moves deep stroke combination, that, however, is not easy to find. After black's stroke upon white's move 27-22, you'll see an ingenious stroke 22x24 by white. Le Soir 1946.

Dutch Master of Draughts since 1937 was also editor of high-standing draughts columns in several newspapers. In his time recognised as best blind draughts player. In addition, Philip's creations of compositions on the draughts board are still impressive. Three examples are shown here.

1: In the twenties of the last century, there were no so-called 'Strong Rules' developed for draughts compositions. So, non-economic strokes and a not sharp ending were no problem. Nowadays, we are becoming gradually more and more tolerant with respect to the SR's, if they prohibit beautiful stroke combinations, as would have been in this example! 2: Here, a combination of many strokes, with as highlight a 4x5 stroke, goes on and on with a sharp natural as ending. Het Damspel January, 1931.

3: Evidently, the happy ending of this 9x9 composition by the white king's stroke is the most surprising. Het Damspel of July 1928.

1: Maar liefst vijf economische tweeslagen op rij om zo wit te laten winnen. Tweede prijs 'Suiker Concours 1976'. Zal de dubbele oppositie wellicht de reden zijn geweest dat John net niet de hoofdprijs won?
Even five economic two-strokes on a row in order to let white win. Second price 'Suiker Concours 1976'. Maybe, the double opposition could be the reason that John didn't just won the first price?

2: Met de opdracht 'de witte dam schuift tweemaal' werd een jaar later wel de hoofdprijs gewonnen met deze fraaie compositie. 'Concours Noord-Oostpolder 1977'.
Nevertheless, with the task 'the white king moves twice', one year later the first price was won with this very beautiful composition. 'Concours Noord-Oostpolder 1977'.

3: Tja, hier resteert na afloop nog een zwarte schijf op veld 15, maar dat is geen reden om het kolkende slagspel te vergeten! Amersfoortse Courant 17 december 1988.

In 2015 wakker geschud door onze website en facebook: "Ik heb jaren geleden wat damproblemen gemaakt. Won de Starterswedstrijd 2004 en daarna heeft Pieter Kuiper mij min of meer gecoached. Heb ook nog een aantal jaren in het bestuur van de KvD gezeten als secretaris (als opvolger van Pieter). Ik maak niet zoveel problemen meer, maar door al dat digitale gedoe is mijn interesse weer gewekt!"
Got a 'wake-up call' in 2015 by our KvD website and facebook and became "re-interested" in draughts composing. Made many years ago draughts problems, did win a tournament in 2004, was coached by Pieter Kuiper, and was even a number of years secretary of our Society.

This is the winning composition of the starters draughts composing tournament 2004. It obeys the so-called 'Sharp Rules' of draughts composing, a.o. no side solutions, a sharp ending, economic strokes. De Problemist October 2004.

2: "De stand na de slag 26x10 van wit is best bijzonder in de aangegeven ontleding, waarbij zwart in de derde zet 45x43 slaat (bij 25x43 wit wint ook). Geïnspireerd op de artikelenserie DamOpBezetVeld in De Problemist."
The position after white's stroke 26x10 is quite special (in the solution given, black plays 45x43: white also wins if black plays 25x43). Inspired by the series 'King-on-occupied-position' in De Problemist.

3: "Mooi beginstandje. Niet moeilijk, maar wel fijn als alles zo mooi klopt." De Problemist augustus 2008.
Initial position is game-like. Not that difficult to solve, but it is always nice when everything is OK in a problem. De Problemist August 2008.

Heeft zich als partijspeler in zijn jonge jaren ook met de damproblematiek bezig gehouden. Door werk en gezin daarna te weinig tijd voor gehad, maar nu, in 2015 als 60-plusser weer enthousiast begonnen met de problematiek en verzorgt sinds kort een damrubriek in het Brabants Damnieuws, het blad van de PNDB (Provinciale Noord-Brabantse Dambond), als opvolger van Johan Konings. Hieronder drie composities van een problemist die zich nog steeds, bescheiden maar ten onrechte, 'amateur' noemt.
Still an active draughts player, was as youngster also active in draughts composing, but through family and work he had to skip this time-consuming activity. In 2015, Henk became again active, both as editor of a draughts column in the magazine of the Draughts Society of the provence of Brabant, The Netherlands, and is our editor Social Media (KvD facebook and twitter). 1: "Door oplosser Jan Kroeze, als commentator van de probleemrubriek in De Problemist van oktober 2014, omschreven als: 'Ik kwam er niet uit. Na de vierde zet ben ik de weg kwijt geraakt. En toen bekeek ik de auteursoplossing: het is een mooi en ingewikkeld probleem. De slag 45x14! is schitterend: twee zwarte dammen meteen voor de bijl en pal er achteraan de laatste dam. Het doet mij denken aan een schilderij van Barnett Newman. Je kunt er uren naar kijken!' Dit doet mij als 'kleine'problemist' veel deugd." De Problemist juni 2014.
Comments of Jan Kroeze, De Problemist of October 2014: I couldn't solve it, I lost the way after the fourth move. When I saw the author's solution, it was clear to me: it's a beautiful and complicated draughts problem. The stroke 45x14! is splendid: two black kings are hit, while the third one is soon thereafter hit too. This reminds me of a painting of Barnett Newman: you can watch it for hours. (So ... Henk 'non-professional'? We don't think so!) De Problemist June 2014.

2: "Hoewel dit probleem nog nergens is gepubliceerd, vind ik het zelf een heel leuk probleem, genaamd de 'Drie Zwarte Dammen'." 3: Deze bevat een mooie eerste zet van wit: tweemaal tweeslag plus drieslag van zwart naar dam. De witte schijf op veld 15 'sluipt' vervolgens naar dam, maar legt tenslotte 't loodje. Wit gunt zwart op het eind weer een dam met fatale gevolgen, voor zwart. De Problemist april 2003.

1: Met afstand zijn beste compositie: na zwarts slag 31x33 moet wit even bijkomen omdat er zes zwarte stukken in zijn territorium zijn binnengedrongen. De witte dam maakt dan in twee meerslagen grote schoonmaak! KvD jubileumboek 1981, p. 76.

Drie juweeltjes van een zeer talentvolle damproblemist, die, helaas, niet zoveel composities heeft gemaakt. Maar is sinds kort, dankzij onze facebook, weer actief geworden.
