Michel Sabater (1946)

Twee problemen van deze Franse damproblemist (én trouwe abonnee van De problemist) in mooie gescheiden aanvangsstanden, die met name partijspelers zullen aanspreken. Ook de afwikkeling van beide problemen zou zo uit een werkelijke dampartij tevoorschijn kunnen zijn gekomen, inclusief een aantal forcings!
Two problems of this French draughts composer (and devoted subscriber of De Problemist) in good separated initial positions, that draughts players will appreciate. Also the solutions could have directly been achieved in a real draughts game, including a number of forcings!

1: La Marseillaise juli 1981, uitmondend in een klassiek eindspel van Cornelis Blankenaar.

Christian van der Schaaf (1960)

"Wat betreft mijn eigen prestaties op het probleemgebied, die zijn van dien aard dat ik mezelf niet wil vergelijken met echte problemisten, daarvoor is mijn fantasie te beperkt en te zeer bepaald door mijn verleden als partijspeler."
May-be somewhat too modest: considers himself not as a real draughts composer as his fantasy is too small being for a long time a draughts player.

1: "Ik noemde het eindspelletje Blonde van achteren, omdat ik de originele Blonde ken met de witte dam op 15 en zwarte schijven op 14 en 32 wit aan zet: 1.15-42 14-19 2.42-15 19-23 3.15 - 20! The author calls the end game 'Blonde from the back', as he knew the original Blonde with the white king on 15 and the black men on 14 and 32 with white to move; 1.15-42 14-19 2.42-15 19-23 3.15-20! Cor Schaap (1906-1967)

Toch verrassend hoe dit mooie standje met de twee hekken uitrolt, want de zwarte schijf 39 moet toch eerst even dam worden. NBD-circulaire (zoals De Problemist tot 1948 heette) 10 mei 1942.

Jan Scheijen (1918-1985)

'Linda Schnieders'

Tot nu toe de enige dame in de Showroom. Met een compositie die tijdens haar partij tegen Agita Marterere 'als vanzelf' ontstond. Linda had duidelijk de lead, maar zonder Agita zou dit partij- probleem niet ontstaan zijn (en kunnen we als co-auteur bestempelen). Hebben zij zich nu plotsklaps gekatapulteerd naar het walhalla van de damesproblematiek? Ja, maar wellicht toch nog eenmalig. De Problemist oktober 2014.

The only lady in the Showroom, with a composition that occurred during a game against Agita Martere. Linda had the lead, but without Agita this problem never would have been created (so, we should her appoint as co-author). Are they a new female generation of draughts composers? Yes, but probably once. De Problemist October 2014.

Harm Schurer (1928-2018)

Een tamelijk voorspelbare en saaie combinatie. Waarom dan toch in de Showroom? Omdat je als witspeler wel moet doorzien of het wint! Wit haalt wel dam, maar verliest die weer. Er volgt een lastig eindspel waar zowel wit als zwart dammen weten te behalen! Wit wint uiteindelijk door de zwarte dam af te vangen. Al met al is het logisch dat Schurer juist dit probleem demonstreerde zo gauw hij de kans kreeg: het is van begin tot eind in balans en lijkt zo uit de partij weggelopen! A somewhat predictable and dull combination. Why this one in the Showroom? Because, you have to realise that you as white may win! White gets a king, but looses that. Subsequently, there follows a difficult end game: both white and black are able to get a king! Finally, white wins by catching the black king. That's why Schurer showed this composition on every opportunity: from beginning to end in balance and a beautiful example that could have been derived from a draughts game! Hub Simons (1962)

1: Alles staat in deze keurige stand in het teken van de capriolen die de witte schijf 28 uithaalt: leuk! Deze problemist stopte vrij snel na publicatie van dit probleem: wie kijkt er niet uit naar zijn terugkeer*? De Problemist oktober 2001.

This game-like position offers as highlight the caprioles that the white man on 28 makes: enjoyable! This composer, regrettably, stopped rather soon after publication of this problem: when coming back*? De Problemist October 2001.

2: Wit offert acht van zijn schijven via enkele meerslagcombinaties en pakt via tussenlopen in één slag acht zwarte schijven terug, eindigend in enkelvoudige oppositie. Dam Eldorado 1981.
White sacrifices eight of his pieces through a couple of majority take combinations and wins by entrance into the breeches eight black pieces in one stroke, ending in single opposition. Dam Eldorado 1981.

3: Een forcing gevolgd door een dubbele tweegever helpen wit aan een dam, die daarna een stap opzij doet en zich na een slag opoffert. Wit wint tenslotte het eindspel na het halen van een nieuwe dam. Concours FMJD 1988, categorie B.

Jacob Sluiter (1905-1991)

Tjipke Smedinga (1955)

1: "Toeval, toeval en nog eens ... Na diverse mislukte pogingen een compositie tot een scherp gewonnen slot te krijgen, er bleven twee witte en zwarte schijven ver van elkaar over, kwam er een 3x3 eindspel te voorschijn waarin een zwarte schijf helemaal vanaf veld 30 naar een plek wordt gedreven waar wit hem alleen slechts bij hoge uitzondering wil hebben: de damrij! By accident, and again ... by accident. After many disasters to complete a draughts composition with a sharp ending, two white and black men remained, far from each others. As a surprise, this was the start of a 3x3 end game by which white has to drive a black man from position 30 towards a position close to black's king's row! Leeuwarder Courant November 4, 1995. A composition based on a really brilliant 3x3 end game of Henk van Alphen from 1953. Draughts players Auke Scholma and Tjalling Goedemoed judged this in their draughts columns with many !!!!!! An example that a composition without strokes can be beautiful. Leeuwarder Courant /Nieuwsblad van het Noorden and Friesch Dagblad, February 6 and 5, 2010, respectively.

3: Eerst rustig een paar zwarte schijven op hun plaats zetten, dan de zwarte dam een reis laten maken en dat alles met de nodige plakkers. Gemaakt 27 december 2015, KvD website 30 oktober 2016. "Nu echter niet meer een eerste publicatie: op 17 oktober 2016 gebruikte Stasys Zilevicius deze compositie, samen met nog 99 anderen, als oplosopgave in de eerste ronde van een internationale oploswedstrijd op de site van de Litouwse dammers www.lskms.puslapiai.lt, nadat hij me per e-mail al over deze compositie had laten weten: 'this one is nice and good work!"

Herman Spanjer (1956)

1: Spanjer is zelf niet erg te spreken over dit probleem, maar dat lijkt een vorm van zelfkastijding die waarachtig niet op zijn plaats is: het is ondanks de minschijf een mooi probleem, vooral dankzij de fraaie plakker van de witte dam. En dan te bedenken dat dit probleem bedacht werd door een zestienjarig kereltje. Elseviers Weekblad 22 juli 1972.
Spanjer doesn't like this problem, but that is some wrong kind of self-punishment: although black has one piece more, it is a beautiful problem, in particular due to the wonderful sticking of the white king. Last but not least: this creation was made by a sixteen-year old sonny. Elseviers Weekblad July 22, 1972.

2: Een fijnzinnig ding dat in elke bloemlezing thuishoort. Nol Polman is waarschijnlijk de geestelijk vader van het motiefje. NRC Handelsblad 1 maart 1975.

Rob Spijkers (1946)

Beheert de zogenaamde MotiefMijn, een verzameling van meer dan 50.000 motieven! Een unieke en zeer waardevolle data base voor problemisten en partijspelers, die gaandeweg gedigitaliseerd wordt. Hieronder twee van zijn 7x7-miniaturen, die uiteraard eindigen in een motief en nog niet eerder zijn gepubliceerd. Beide zijn door Eddie vd Acker en Wim de Zwart op hun originaliteit gecheckt.
Manages the so-called MotifMine, a collection of more than 50,000 motifs! A unique and quite valuable data base for both problemists and players, that is gradually transformed into a digital format. Below two of his 7x7 miniatures, that have not published before, ending of course into a motif.

1: "Opgedragen aan Johan Konings, die zoveel (achtergrond)werk doet voor de MotiefMijn! Het miniatuur oogt partijachtig met gescheiden stand van de zwarte en witte schijven. Het motief, waarvan ik toen echt dacht het zelf ontdekt te hebben, is echter van Dirk de Ruiter (De Problemist van augustus 2011). Tja, zo zou elk motief dienen te zijn: niet te ingewikkeld, toch een beetje verrassend en scherp tot het einde. Compositiedatum: 7 november 2012." Publicatiedatum website: november 2015.
Dedicated to Johan Konings, who does quite a lot of supporting work for the MotifMine! This miniature has a game-like position with separated black and white men. The motif, thought to be new, was, however, published before by Dirk de Ruiter in De Problemist of August 2011. A beautiful example how a motif should look like: not too complicated, somewhat surprising and sharp to the very end. Composition date: November 7, 2012. Publication date on the website: november 2015.

2: "Dit standje is gekozen omdat er een vierkantje in zit (ik heb een hekel aan gatenkaas-standen) én omdat het eindigt in een geweldig motief van A. Sosin (1930). Ik heb jarenlang standen verzameld waarin een vierkantje voorkomt en in 1990 een boekje "De Magiek van het Vierkant" gepubliceerd. Magiek is hier een samentrekking van magie en tragiek!" Compositiedatum 2001. Op de KvD-site 2015. Rob's damvriend Sijbrand van Eijk had in 2002 bijna dezelfde compositie op het Sosin-motief gemaakt, zonder dat van elkaar te weten.
This initial position was chosen as it contains a square of four white men (so without unappetising cheese holes) ánd the ending into a wonderful motif of A. Sosin (1930). Rob collected for many years positions containing such squares and published those in 1990 by a booklet "De Magiek van het Vierkant" ('The magic and tragedy of the square")! Composition date 2001. On the KvD-site 2015. Without knowing from each other, Rob's draughts friend Sijbrand van Eijk had made almost the same composition on the Sosin motif in 2002.

Frank van Sterkenburg (1926-2012)

Was as active player more an investigator of the draughts game than a composer of problems: only 47 published compositions are known from TurboDambase. The three compositions shown below have been published again in De Problemist of August, 2015, as part of an 'In Memoriam' devoted to Frank.

1: A variation of the 'Coup Raphael'. Brabants Nieuwsblad May 24, 1975.

2: Second price 'Miniatures' contest of our Society in 1965-1966.

3: The initial position was very important to Frank. In this way, he created this composition, that may be considered as the best arrangement of this stroke combination! Het Nieuwe Damspel July/August 1977.

Arie van der Stoep (1944)

1: Van de oud-eindredacteur van De Problemist uit zijn jonge jaren: geniaal uitgesteld damoffer met 2-30, meerslag en waanzinnige bewerking van zwarte opsluiting door witte schijf op 49! L'Effort november 1971.
From this former editor-in-chief of De Problemist a problem made as youngster. Very special: a delayed king's offer through 2-30, a stroke and a crazy arrangement of a black enclosure by a white man on 49! L'Effort November 1971.

2: Prachtige combinaties, inclusief diverse damreizen, een verrassend damoffer van deze verborgen Timoneda-bewerking! De Problemist juni 1968.

3: Wit laat rustig zes van zijn schijven slaan met een 1x2x2x3x3x3x6-slag na een "Kieboom-beginzet" (zo genoemd door Pieter Kuijper in De Problemist van april 2016, blz. 49) en wint snel en scherp. Niet-economisch, brommen de aanhangers van de Scherpe Regels, terwijl partijdammers ervan smullen om op deze wijze te kunnen winnen. Blijft de telkens terugkerende vraag van de webmaster: "Waarom mag in de problematiek wit wel tig zwarte stukken oneconomisch slaan, maar is dat voor zwart verboden?" Aan deze SR wordt daarom meer en meer getwijfeld. Deze website 29 juni 2016.
White simply allows black to catch six white pieces through a 1x2x2x3x3x3x6-stroke after a "Kieboom-startmove" (as called by Pieter Kuijper in De Problemist of April 2016, page 49). Not economic, the supporters of the Sharp Rules will complain, while draughts players greatly will enjoy such a moment of winning fast and sharp. Remains the recurring question of the webmaster: "Why, in problem making, is it allowed for white to perform strokes without economy, but forbidden for black to do so?" More and more, people are getting in doubt of this SR. This website June 29, 2016.

Arend Stuurman (1919-1996)

1: Zes meerslagen achter elkaar, het theoretisch maximum in een 13x13 stand, met een prachtig slot! De Problemist augustus 1945.

Ton Sijbrands (1949)

Oud-wereldkampioen dammen. Former world champion draughts.

1: "Gemaakt naar aanleiding van een partij-analyse door oud-wereldkampioen Deslauriers, die de grootste combinatiespeler aller tijden genoemd mag worden: op laconieke wijze deelde hij mee dat alle analyses die gedaan werden nutteloos waren, omdat wit de partij op slag met een combinatie kan winnen!" Jeugdwerk, gepubliceerd in zijn rubriek 'dammen' in De Tijd van 22 februari 1969: 'Juwelen van combinaties' van ene, toen nog, Tonny Sijbrands.
This composition has been inspired by a game analysis by former world champion draughts Deslauriers, who must be named as the greatest player creating combinations ever. Laconically, he said that all analyses made of a certain game were useless as white could have won the game straightforward through a combination! Made when he was only 20 years old, and then was called Tonny Sijbrands. De Tijd February 1969.

2: "In mijn blindpartij tegen Ton Eekelschot, Hilversum 2014, was er na zwarts 35ste zet een niet- alledaagse stelling ontstaan.Bij de analyse van dit fragment stuitte ik op een spectaculaire slagwending die ik in dit partijprobleem heb verwerkt." Wit wint via een aantal forcings: alleen de hoofdvariant bij het sterkste tegenspel van zwart is weergegeven. Eén van de 32 partijen in de blindimultaan waarmee Ton Sijbrands het wereldrecord (weer) op zijn naam bracht. De Volkskrant 7 en 14 februari 2015.

Alain Tavernier (1956)

1: "Même si la position nést pas très pure ce problème reste l'un de ceux que jái préféré composer! J'aime beaucoup ce type de composition plusieurs mouvements de dames noires et de sacrifices de dames blanches, ce n'est jamais très facile à réaliser lorsque aucun des pions blancs ne se trouvent sur l'une des cases de 1 à 10 ! Rétro concours 2004, 2éme en Categorie B."

2: "Le premier temps est un peu la surprise de ce problème ou l’on retrouve une offre de dame blanche. L’arrêt de la dame blanche à 43 est une jolie découverte ! Concours Lietuva 2001, 4éme en catégorie B."

3: "Une position avec un bel équilibre positionnel. La combinaison est simple mais fait appel à plusieurs ce qui en fait principalement son charme ! Concours FFJD 1990, 4éme en catégorie B."

Arjen Timmer (1988)

1: "Een mooie partijpraktische aanvangsstand, een slagsysteem in optima forma, een verrassende zwarte tegenactie, maar vervolgens ook twee witte dammen die het scherp winnen van twee zwarte schijven!" 2: Ook hier enkele dwangzetten in de ontleding, de zwarte schijf 6 die tenslotte dam mag worden, maar tenslotte fataal wordt voor zijn medebroeders. De twee witte dammen zijn de overgebleven drie zwarte schijven op een mooie wijze de baas. Alleen de hoofdvariant is hier weergegeven. KNDB-jubileumcompositiewedstrijd 2011.

Jan van Tol (1920-2005)

Waarschijnlijk de beroemdste Timoneda vanuit een 'partijstand' en met een lange 'partijachtige' ontleding waarbij zwart een paar keer geforceerd moet zetten: de afzonderlijke fasen van de ontleding stellen weinig voor, het is de combinatie ervan die het doet! Dam Eldorado oktober 1979.
