From Rijeka, Croatia, a former participant of the World Championship Draughts, is nowadays a prominent draughts composer and specialist in end games. Won in a very convincing way the second World contest end game composition with a score of 497 out of 500. Composed more than 2000 7x7 miniatures, according to TurboDambase, during the period 1999-2001. Did he do something else in that time, we wonder? Many of these have been published in 'Damnieuws' of Piet Lauwen and in the column of Rob Spijkers, who also managed the 'Groeneveld archive', containing all known 7x7 draughts miniatures, with Lepsic's help.

1: This miniature shows a combination starting with a forced stroke, a beautiful end game (of which only the main variant is given here) and a surprising finish: black can get a king on both 46 and 47, but is catched by white's moves 17-26 and 17-3, respectively. De Problemist April 1999.

Beautiful seven-cracker from the baseline, no white kings and after black's stroke choice 16x there are three white men in a row on stroke, quite joyful to see something like that. Quite special is the way white is able to situate B45, including the formation W33.34.40 on top for 34x12 followed by back's stroke 45x23. Without white kings, the massive black position have to be demolished by a couple of solitaire-like strokes, in this case 34x12 and 48x37. A highlight in this genre! Prov. Zeeuwse Courant 1966.

De Problemist december 2010: "Wat een verrassing! Een brief uit de damwereld van lang vervlogen tijden. 40 jaar is niet niks. Ik studeerde vanaf 1966 in Nijmegen en was toen lid van 'Vriendenkring Nijmegen" en hield ik me intensief met het dammen en de damproblematiek bezig. Vanaf 1967 tot 1987 heb ik damproblemen gemaakt. Ik heb ze nog allemaal in een boekje bewaard. Vanaf 1987 heb ik geen dambord meer aangeraakt en geen enkel probleem meer gemaakt." Maar ... wie weet ...?
In De Problemist of December 2010, Hans Leenhuis wrote about his surprise about an inviting letter of the editor, being many years inactive in draughts. He studied in Nijmegen, played draughts there and made also draughts composions from 1967-1987. Since then, never took the draughts board ... but who knows .... ?

1: Deze inzending van het Suikertournooi van 1976 kent een zeer groot tempoverschil van 19, maar is verder perfect tot het eind. Hoogtepunt is de verrassende zet 38-32 van de combinatie. Werd alleen in de bijlage vermeld, waarschijnlijk omdat de aanvangsstand onvoldoende partij-achtig is.
The composition, sent to a tournament of the Dutch sugar industry, shows a great difference in tempo of 19, but further is perfect to the end. Highlight is the surprising move 38-32 of the combination. This, however, did not get much appreciation, probably because the initial position was not game-like enough.

One of his favourites: a difficult combination that, until now, has not given a name. His suggestion: "I have not named after a stroke combination, so ... ?" This was the most difficult problem of the KvD X-mas solution contest 2013. The real clue is the 5x5 position on the board, after the combination, that had to be solved. Look how this is going!
Comments of a participant: "One becomes silent upon seeing such a beauty: a 24-moves-long, completely sharp variant! In particular, the white forcing between the 9th and 12th move is impressive."

Composed upon the idea 'king on accupied square 5'. It took the author a year to accomplish this 18x17 position, with that big 'black column'. Therefore named 'Torch On Fire', as a symbol for the wish that also mind games may light the Olympic torch. Although there is only one stroke during the solution, the large number of shots is pleasent to see. Even as draughts player, the author finds it often difficult to make compositions with a game-like initial position. De Problemist February 2009.

Wellicht even een 'lichtpuntje' voor hen, deze compositie waarin na wits tweede zet alle witte schijven op slag staan, de witte dam bij zijn eerste rondslag op arrogante wijze de zwarte dam negeert om hem vervolgens bij zijn tweede rondslag alsnog te pakken! Compositiedatum 28 september 2014, twee maanden later gepubliceerd in Oekraïne!
Composed in order to give some hope and support to Serge Yushkevitch and the other people of Ukraine. In this composition, may that shine for them, all white men are on stroke after white's second move, the white king subsequently ignores the black king during its first stroke around, but catches him during the second one. Was published two month later in the Ukraine, in December 2014.

Deze twee composties eindigen in een prachtige 8x1 Laocoön (zie: R) eindstand met een 45 = D50 variant, ongelofelijk toch dat dit mogelijk is! Interessant om te vergelijken met de 7x1 Laocoön van Andreas Kuyken met eveneens een 45 = D50 variant, naast nog vele andere perfect scherpe varianten. Toch zijn de Laocoons van beide auteurs weer heel anders met damhalen op 2 respectievelijk op 3! Nikolaev heeft daarnaast kans gezien zijn vondst prachtig in te leiden met prachtig slagwerk, terwijl er nog wat geklust moet worden om de zwarte schijven op hun plek te krijgen alvorens dam te halen.
These two compostions result in a beautiful 8x1 Laocoon (see: R) end position with a 45 = K50 variant, unbelievable that such is possible! Interesting to compare with the 7x1 Laocoön Andreas Kuyken containing also a 45 = K50, next to many all-sharp variants, but with the white king on 3 instead of 2! Nikolaev' composition shows an impressive introduction with strokes, while there is subsequent hard work to do to get the black men on the right positions, before white goes for king.

Een In Memoriam is verschenen in De Problemist van december 2015. Op de rouwkaart stond: "Tussen de PC en het dambord lag een wereld voor Fred. Nu is hij uitgeschreven en uitgezet". Dat Fred wat in zijn mars had, bewijst onderstaan trio.
